Whatzit?

What's a Whatzit?
UX3 Precancel?

  • What's a Whatzit?
As you might guess, it refers to any philatelic item that I can't figure out. Since I collect mostly postal history, my own whatzits will mostly be covers with questions relating to postmarks, rates, and such. However, I may have some stamp whatzits as well. I welcome your whatzits. The more there are, the more info there is to go around. I can't host them myself but I will be happy to link to them if you have them on the web. Let me know if you have any info on these! I will add new ones as they come up.
  • UX3 Precancel
I'm not quite sure what to make of this. It's a UX3, I think--I can't see the watermark to save my life. There is no postmark on the front, but there is an octagon from Marietta OH on the reverse, dated Jan. 1, 1874. As such it's a fairly nifty item. By why on the center of the back of the card? And more interestingly, the postmark was obviously struck there prior to the writing of the message. I have two theories. The first is that this is some sort of "precancelled" card. The second, and rather more plausible theory, is that the author of the message was a postal employee. Any thoughts?
