Potomac Steamboat, partial but identifable CDS (Towle G-21-a, scarcity VI) ties #11 on buff cover with some edge wear and staining, addressed to Commodore William Green aboard USS Decatur at Pensacola, Florida.  Manuscript "Ford 5" though it is unclear to where the cover was forwarded and there are no additional postmarks.  Unusual combination of waterway route agent origin and naval destination.

$60

#104
St. Johnsbury, Vermont Business College "stamp", 2 cents, TIED on practice cover addressed to the ficticious town of "Tawawa," Ohio.  Name at upper left is presumably the student preparing the letter and the "93" the grade received.  A few small edge tears and some slight soiling, but a rare college stamp cover.

$250

#106
Violet RFD No. 1 handstamp flag cancel of Fiatt, Illinois on a comic postcard.  No date, presumably delivered "up the road" by the carrier while on his route.  Some soiling; message is in pencil.  Richow scarcity VIII.

East Holden, Maine, Feb. 27, 1912 commercially produced hanstamp flag with 15 negative inset stars, though that is not very clear on this relatively lightly struck example.  Reverse of postal card is a freight arrival notice for the Maine Central Railroad Co.
$20

Scarce WWI military flag used at St. Nazaire, France, with no numeral in the diespace; used only in July and August 1918.  Ordinary low quality envelope with military address and censor addressed to Holliston MA; flag is a bit run off at upper right.  Knights of Columbus letterhead with soldier's letter enclosed.  Scarce WWI flag; Langford's 1976 Flag Cancel Encyclopedia lists at $20.00.
$30

Nice example of the WWI military flag with number 705 on a cleaner-than-usual cover, with unit identified in the return address and "soldier's mail" endorsement, purple censor marking.  Uncommon and cleaner than usual.
$25

#111
Boston involute flag, Langford #3 (P-43, dial 2), October 3, 1896.  In use just 5 weeks, a bit light across the top of the stars and dial, but an uncommon involute flag.  Some tearing to backflap.
$20

$40

#126
Exposition post office machine postmark from the Panama-Pacific Exposition of San Francisco; International machine.  Virtually all strikes of this marking are on postcard, unfortunately this cover uses a 2 cent Washington definitive instead of one of the exposition commemoratives.  Apparently stray pencil mark below stamp (just barely affects bottom right corner); envelope backflap has Palace Hotel crest with expo logo.  Nice example of this station machine.
$20

$100

1 cent impert, Scott #314, used single on greetings postcard from Chandlersville, Ohio, January 1909.  Strange to see an imperf from a small town like this on personal mail, but here it is.  Stamp has a small "bite" at upper right corner.  Nice usage.

1927 College of Wooster Bulletin, a newsletter, mailed from Wooster to Canada, with a 2 cent 4th-bureau coil.  The bulletin was entered in the US as second-class mail.  Although the first-class rate was 2 cents to Canada in 1927, it is also possible that this is indeed 2nd class to Canada.  Either way, still a very interesting usage.
$50
#211
1838 Randolph Massachusetts GREEN CDS with ATTACHED handstamp 25 cent rate, also manuscript rate at upper right, to Louisville KY.  Short letter content, strongly struck rate marking, mostly clear CDS.  Scarce, especially in green.  Two toned file folds, including one that catches the right edge of the postmark.
