Licking County Postal History

Licking County is located in central Ohio, roughly east of Columbus. It was first erected in 1808, and is currently composed of 686 square miles.

A total of 88 different named post offices have operated in Licking County since its establishment--this includes the rural branch at Outville as a separate listing, but does not include any stations of Newark. With discontinuances and re-establishments counted as separate listings, that number jumps to about 100. To the best of my knowledge, 18 of these offices are still operating.

Licking County is a difficult one to collect. No less than 9 post offices failed to operate for even one year--and that doesn't even include some of the periods of operation for post offices that experienced temporary discontinuances. Several other offices barely missed the one-year cutoff.

Nonetheless, Licking County offices have produced some very attractive markings, including a fancy double oval stampless marking from Granville, a series of boxed straightline stampless markings from Newark, a Barr-Fyke machine from Newark (one of only 2 towns in Ohio to use this type of machine) and so forth. Several offices in the county used the so-called "Doane" markings early in this century; there are also several reported RFD markings. A link in the post office list below will take you to an image of a favorite item from my collection.

I have developed an online catalog of Licking County stampless postal markings, and I hope eventually to expand it to include later markings as well.

I am very much interested in Licking County covers; I'd appreciate it if you could share some of your pieces with me. I buy, sell, and trade, but would even appreciate photocopies just so I can see what else is out there. I have included a list of Licking County post offices below. This information is taken from Gallagher and Patera's 1979 work The Post Offices of Ohio. A listing of Licking County post offices, along with a short article by Allison Cusick and images of some wonderful covers may be located in the March 1985 issue of the Ohio Postal History Journal, issue #31. The OPHJ article also includes a table locating each office in the relevant township. The Ohio Postal History Society, incidentally, has a small webpage here.

If a listing below is in bold, I still need it for my collection. As you can see, I'm still looking for quite a few items!
